Parker PGP517 Series Fixed Displacement External Gear Pump
Product Description
The PGP517 is the largest frame size within Parker PGP500 aluminium gear pump family. It is a high-performance fixed-displacement external gear pump designed for mobile hydraulics. Its matching gear motor is PGM517. Featuring 13-tooth optimized gear profile, pressure-balanced thrust plates and heavy-duty journal bushings, PGP517 delivers larger flow output than PGP505 and PGP511. Single, tandem and multi-section configurations are available. It is widely adopted for medium-to-heavy mobile hydraulic systems requiring lightweight aluminium construction, compact installation and stable high-pressure performance.
1. Overview
PGP517 is an external-meshing fixed displacement gear pump. The 13-tooth gear geometry minimizes flow ripple and operating noise. Its modular design enables flexible selection of mounting flanges, shaft ends, port arrangements, seal materials and integrated valves. Clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) rotation are standard options. It is the preferred high-flow aluminium gear pump for tractors, medium-sized construction machinery, forklifts and large aerial work platforms.
2. Construction & Key Features
- Three-piece high-strength aluminium housing: Light weight, excellent heat dissipation and sufficient rigidity, suitable for mobile applications with weight limitation. Cast iron flange options are available for heavy-duty installation.
- Pressure-balanced thrust plates: Automatically compensates axial clearance, sustains high volumetric efficiency over the service life and reduces friction and wear.
- Heavy-duty journal bushing design: Fluid-lubricated bearings provide reliable load capacity for continuous operation. Axial thrust on the drive shaft is not allowed. Outboard bearing versions are optional for applications with significant radial shaft loads.
- Precision ground 13-tooth gear set: Optimized tooth profile, low flow pulsation, quiet operation, volumetric efficiency up to 96%. Silent version (PGP517H) is available for low-noise requirements.
- Modular construction: Multiple SAE B 2-bolt flanges, rectangular through-bolt flanges, shaft ends and port styles are optional. Tandem multi-pump assembly is supported to supply independent hydraulic circuits from one driving source.
- Integrated valve options:
- Relief valve with anti-cavitation check valve
- Priority flow valve
- Load-sensing unloading valve
- Solenoid unloading relief valve, cross-port relief valve, etc.

5. Ordering Code Explanation
Example model: PGP517B0280HP3D1NE3E3
- PGP517: Series identifier (PGM517 = matching gear motor)
- A: Single pump; B: Tandem / multi-section pump
- 0280: Displacement code (28 cm³/rev)
- C / E: Rotation (CCW / CW)
- P3: Flange code
- D1: Shaft type code
- N: Seal material code
- E3E3: Port configuration
- Suffix codes: integrated valve, revision version
Note: Verify port layout, shaft diameter, rotation direction and built-in valves before pump replacement.
6. Operation Guidelines
- Direct drive by flexible coupling is recommended. Avoid excessive radial shaft loads; select outboard bearing version if significant radial force exists.
- Suction line must be sized adequately. Keep low inlet pressure drop to prevent cavitation damage to thrust plates and gear sets.
- Recommended filtration: 10 μm hydraulic filter. Regular oil change is required. Although tolerant to contamination, solid particles accelerate thrust plate wear.
- Built-in relief valve is only for system protection. It is NOT designed for continuous throttling or pressure regulation duty.
- For tandem pumps, each section has its independent pressure rating. Check displacement and pressure separately for every section during selection.
